Mastering Lost-Foam Casting Technology
Lost-Foam Casting Technology stands as a hallmark of modern foundry advancement, offering near-net shapes, tight tolerances (±0.005 mm/mm), and surface finishes as fine as 2.5 µm. By embedding polystyrene foam patterns into unbonded sand under vacuum, this process merges the intricacy of investment casting with the cost efficiency of conventional sand casting.
Lost Foam Casting Technology - A deep dive
First, engineers craft foam patterns using injection-moulded EPS or CNC-cut foam. After integrating gating systems, the patterns receive a refractory coating to enhance permeability and mould strength.
Next, sand is vibrated under vacuum to secure the coated pattern before pouring molten metal, which vaporises the foam and fills the mould cavity instantaneously.
